Tribune
Launches School Funding Series
Thanks to your hard work, school funding
reform is making headlines on the
editorial page!
Yesterday, the
Chicago
Tribune launched
“From Here to Excellence,” a
nine-part editorial series that will
call attention to Illinois’ broken
school funding system and propose ways
to improve funding, quality and
accountability.
“This is the time to reform the way
that Illinois finances its schools.
This is also the time to reform how
school districts spend that money.
Today, the Tribune launches a series
of editorials that will explain
exactly how that can be done.”
As the series continues, A+ Illinois
will examine the Tribune’s
recommendations in light of our
principles:
·
Ensure that all Illinois children
receive a quality education by
establishing fair and adequate
funding that meets the
recommendations of experts at the
state's Education Funding Advisory
Board and increases with inflation;
·
Develop state-based tax revenues
that provide reliable, stable,
long-term resources for schools;
·
Provide meaningful property-tax
relief for homeowners and businesses
that shifts the burden of school
funding away from local property
taxpayers;
·
Invest in strategies to close
Illinois' student achievement gap,
one of the highest nationwide;
·
Improve the state's ailing fiscal
health and protect funding for
essential programs such as health
care and human services.
The next installment of
“From Here to Excellence” will
run on Wednesday, January 31.
